Hidden Sintra Hike
Escape the crowds and step into the wild heart of the Sintra hills, secret forests, granite peaks, and ancient sanctuaries few visitors ever find. This is Sintra beyond the palaces: quiet, mystical, and wonderfully wild. Private and group options available.
The Hidden Sintra Hike Route
We begin on a shaded forest path toward Adrenunes, a cluster of giant granite boulders crowning one of the serra’s highest points, a National Monument that has drawn people here for thousands of years. We take in the views and carry on deeper into the mountains.
Further along comes the day’s one real challenge, entirely optional: a steeper, more demanding path up to a high granite outcrop that asks for a bit of agility. The whole group decides together whether to take it on. If we do, we climb through lush green vegetation onto bare rock, balancing between the boulders, squeezing through gaps and sliding back down, with the landscape falling away toward the Atlantic on every side.
We then reach the Santuário da Peninha, a sanctuary perched at 488 metres with views that, on a clear day, stretch from Cascais and Cabo da Roca all the way to Arrábida. Beside it stands the humble Ermida de São Saturnino, a chapel already recorded in documents from 1191, quietly watching over these hills for more than eight hundred years.
We close through the forest of silence, a stretch of woodland whose mood shifts with the day, enchanted and green under the sun, almost haunted under grey skies, its dramatic cedars groaning in the wind. Either way, it stays with you, before we head back to the van, carrying the quiet of the mountains with us.
Difficulty & Who It's For
Mostly gentle forest walking, with one optional climb over uneven, rocky ground that can get muddy after rain, nothing extreme, and always the group’s choice. Your guide adapts the pace so everyone feels supported, whether you take on the granite or keep to the gentler path.
It’s perfect for curious, adventurous spirits who want to slow down, breathe deeply, and discover a side of the Sintra mountains that stays hidden from the crowds.
